File explorer not responding Windows 10

If you are facing Windows 10 File Explorer problem like it goes to “File Explorer Not Responding” mode or you see “Windows has stopped working” or Windows 10 File Explorer not responding on right click then I have a solution for you that you can try.

I faced the similar Windows File Explorer not responding issue a week ago when I was using Windows 10 File Explorer.

My Windows 10 File Explorer crashes repeatedly, and after lots of research I came up with the solution that worked for me like a charm.

You can also try this Windows 10 File Explorer fix to solve your problem. In my case, there was an old software on my computer that was causing the issue.

Below are the steps by step instructions on how to troubleshoot the “Not Responding” issue.

Step 1. Download & Install CCleaner software (Free), this tool will clean up Windows 10

Step 2. Now launch it and click on the TOOLS option

Step 3. Now go to STARTUP and disable all software that shows up.

Now once you did that, start the software one by one and see if Windows 10 File Explorer is crashing or not.

If after enabling a software File Explorer goes in “Not Responding” or crashes that means that particular software is having the issue.

Just uninstall that software if it’s not essential to you or try downloading the free copy of that software and install again.

In case, the above solution does not work for you then install Microsoft Fix It for Windows 10 and run it on your computer.

5. Windows Navigation Pane Missing

When you go to File Explorer in Windows 10, and you noticed that there is no navigation pane on the left side of the screen, then do not worry.

Just click on the “VIEW” tab that is located at the top of the File Explorer and then click on Navigation pane as shown below.

6. Windows 10 Search Bar Not Working

If the search box not working in Windows 10 File Explorer, then there is a setting in File Explorer in Windows 10 that can be done to make the search function.

The main reason Windows search not working is that option is not enabled. Just follow the below path to enable search in Windows 10 File Explorer.

Go to File on the top left >> Click Change Folder and Search Options >> Click the Search Tab >> Check the box Don’t use the index when searching in file folders for system files(searches might take longer) >> Apply >> Ok.

Now Windows 10 Search bar should work.

7. Windows 10 File Explorer Hangs When Right Clicks?

Many of you may be facing the issue of File Explorer crashing after right-clicking on it. To solve this issue with the Windows 10 File Explorer follow the below steps:

  • Press windows key + X key together on your keyboard. This action will open the Command Prompt with admin privileges.
  • Type “netsh” in the Command Prompt window and hit on Enter button.

How do you send photographs to an email address

WindowsQnA

Hello Sara,

You can use your email to and attach the photographs to it and then send it to the email address that you have. You can also search in Google “How to send emails”

Thanks

Krys

It didn’t help me.
When I opened Windows Explorer and subsequently a file in a folder, and then closed the file, I would be returned to the Windows Explorer page.
With File Explorer it leaves FE open in the background but returns me to my desktop.
This BITES!
I’m usually working with various files and don’t need to have to go to the task bar and choose FE again…
Can I set it to keep File Explorer as the active window and not return to my desktop?
If not I want my Windows 7 back!!!

the more Microsoft changes the programs the more confusing it gets . one of the problems is trying to find

I have spent a lot of money on this computer , less than 2 months and it had a virus caused by the reimage you recommend, surely a brand new computer should not need updating . Does not recognise photo memory card and will not burn to disc. Why is it so complicated ? I have wasted over £600 . Didn’t have any problems with Windows 7

WindowsQnA

Hello Fiona,
If you upgraded your computer to Windows 10 from the image file or the media creation tool that i recommended on this site then there should be no issues as those ISO file is from the Microsoft. I am sorry to hear that it cost you money but Windows 10 is free to upgrade. I also mentioned in one of my article on “How to get help in Windows 10” that if you have any issues upgrading to Windows 10 you can always contact the Microsoft Support. The support is totally free. Thanks

When I try to copy a folder to my backup drive, or my thumb drive which I also use for backup, Windows used to give me the option to merge the folder and replace the old versions of the files. That’s what I want to do. If I work on this project for 365 days, I don’t want 365 versions. I want the latest version saved.

Now it does not give me an option at all. It simply creates “Copy of (folder)”. Argh. I’ve been poking around settings trying to figure out how to make it overwrite, instead of copy, with no luck so far.

I keep on getting a message that says “your PC is on a metered network. Pause OneDrive to save blah blah blah…”. I have no idea what this means and don’t know how to pause OneDrive or why I would want to. Can someone enlighten me please?

Great post, but am still trying to figure out how to open two file explorer windows at the same time as I could in Win 7’s windows explorer. I frequently move or copy files from one drive to another and it helped to have two windows open at the same time with one set to drive C and one to drive E so I could drag and drop. I can’t find a way to do that with file explorer?

I’m an old “geezer” (82 yrs) and not very knowledgeable about computers & software. I want to delete some old games on my Windows 10 and found some directions saying: 1) search for DISK CLEANUP from taskbar but there is no Disk Cleanup icon on my taskbar. 2) select the drive to cleanup and hit OK 3) Under files to delete select the files and hit OK

Sounds simple but since I can’t find a disk cleanup that will allow me access to game files so I can delete them, I’m in a quandry. Can you help?

WindowsQnA

Hi Robert,

You don’t need to run the disk cleanup utility to delete old games from your PC. If you are using windows 10, just follow the below steps to do the needful:
1. Go To Settings.
2. Click The Apss setting.
3. Under Apss & Features you will see the list of applications and games installed on your system.
4. Cick the game that you want to remove and click on uninstall.

Hope this helped
